MONDAY , JULY 26 , 1971 Saturday morning one of the canal walls supporting a tow path collapsed . Canal boat services were not interrupted , but it took quite a while to repair . Believed to have been caused by muskrats , the collapse was repaired by a mix of professional and volunteer crews . In addition to the main collapse a number of smaller leaks were found . Efforts were helmed by Marshall Jacobs , Curtis Derby and Dick McConnell of R . R . McConnell Excavating Co . A bale of paper , straw supplied by the Farmers Exchange and concrete from Baird Supply Co . were hurriedly donated in order to fill the gaps .

TUESDAY , JULY 25 , 1991 On June 26th lifeguard at West Lafayette Village Pool , Paul Noble did just as his job description said . Noble noticed a child struggling after jumping off the diving board . After realizing he wasn ’ t just horsing around the recent graduate went in after him . “ I got down off the chair and jumped into the water after him ,” Noble said . The pool did not record the boy ’ s name , who despite his life being in danger , went back to playing without a care in the world after being rescued . For his actions Noble was praised by the village council earlier this week . Carol Buckeye , manager of the pool , said “ I ’ m really proud of this group of guards I got . The people of Lafayette can feel assured their kids are safe while swimming in the village pool .”
