Where , oh where , are you going ?

Summertime that is . As my wife shared something with me yesterday from an author we both enjoy reading , “ The days are long , but the months , years and decades are short .” They sure are . June — gone . July — only a few days remain when you read this .
It seems school starts at the beginning of August . If memory serves , when I was a kid , school did not start until late September , maybe even after the fair . Or was it Thanksgiving ? I know we started before Christmas . Perhaps that is when I mentally “ kicked in .”
And , of course , I walked through 5 ( or was it 3 ?) feet of snow uphill both ways to school . Now that I think about it — I really did walk uphill both ways in junior high . You know , the one that sat at the top of Roscoe hill ? Uphill to that and uphill home . I ’ ll let you decide on the snow and when school started back in the day .
School does not start at the beginning of
August , but when you flip that calendar from July to August , something changes . Teachers and administrators are going to work . Football and band practices are either happening now or close to starting . Other fall sports , like golf , volleyball and cross country , also are preparing for another season .
What ’ s the point of all this you ask ? I ’ m not real sure myself . Focus more on the now — today — and strengthen your relationships with family and friends . The world is moving at a faster pace all the time . I doubt it will get any slower from here .
Now that the all-star break is over , a quick review of Major League Baseball . Will anyone catch the Yankees ? No . Will anyone catch Houston ? No . Can a team from the American League
Central Division advance to the World Series this year ? No . There are only three races that appear to have any semblance of competition — the American League Central , the National League Central and the National League East . It ’ s a threeway race with the Twins , Guardians and White Sox . But to put it into perspective , the Yankees have won 14 more games than the division-leading Twins as I write this on Monday .
Let ’ s move to football . The Buckeyes are not fooling around with the season opener — the Irish come to town on Sept . 3 for a night game . Then it ’ s another home game with Arkansas State on the 10th and Toledo on the 17th . Conference opener is Wisconsin on the 24th . The Buckeyes have five home games to start the season . That ’ s some good planning and puts a nice ring in the register .
What ’ s next for Coshocton County ? A big finish to wrap up the free summer concert series — downtown on Friday , Aug . 5 . Prior to the concert , come downtown for the annual First Farm Friday event . As everyone knows by now , ERNEST is coming to little ‘ ol Coshocton . We ’ re looking forward to it , and I ’ m sure he ’ ll receive a big welcome from our community . There are a lot of folks working hard to keep the positive momentum going — thanks to all of you .
