FCA camp shows we all have our unique abilities

By Josie Sellers
When I ended up with nerve damage in my foot and couldn ’ t play softball anymore , I was devastated . Sure , it was just co-ed adult summer ball , but it was fun . I liked the sound of the ball hitting the bat , the smell of leather and coming home with my cleats covered in dust .
I pick up the bat every now and then and try to play catch with my oldest daughter . Sometimes I get excited and think I could still play in a game . However , deep down inside I know my days on the field are over . It took me a long time to accept that . With the help of a friend , I started focusing

on what abilities I still had instead of what I lost .
On July 16 I had the opportunity to watch other ’ s discover their abilities . After writing a preview story about the first FCA Coshocton All-Abilities Camp , I decided I wanted to volunteer . Coshocton Regional Medical Center and assistance from the Coshocton Board of Developmental Disabilities .
The FCA All-Ability Camps are free and for anyone age 5-25 with a disability . Campers at the Coshocton event participated in track , soccer , basketball , football and bowling . I had the pleasure of helping out with a group of ladies who came down from Camp Echoing
Hills . Another volunteer and I helped direct them through drills and encouraged them to try new activities . While some were reluctant to give activities a shot , they all participated in the end and let their abilities shine . Cheers could be heard throughout Kids America , and high fives were a common sight throughout the facility .
After a morning full of activities , camp rapped up with lunch and awards .
Campers also heard an important message from Jimmy McNutt , recreational services and outreach director , at Camp Echoing Hills .
“ There is a God in the heavens who sees you and where you are at ,” McNutt said . “ He and the heavenly hosts are cheering for your success .”
Once we stop focusing on our disabilities , we can discover our own levels of abilities .
