Pomarts Jazz band performs

By Marianne Austin
Katherynne Hardesty is out with the Pomarts Jazz band on Saturday mornings in the artPARK and is working on a free concert at the artPARK for Saturday , Aug . 13 .
“ When Anne Cornell from the Pomerene Center approached me about organizing an artPARK Jazz ensemble , I said , ‘ Of course ,’ because there are a lot of good things at the artPARK ,” Hardesty said .
Hardesty met Cornell while working at the Pomerene Center when she was a freshman in high school . She graduated from Coshocton High School in 2020 and will begin her junior year at Capital University in the fall , majoring in music performance .
“ This is a way of getting more advanced into the things I ’ ll be doing in the future once I graduate ,” Hardesty said . “ It really is just for fun too , and it ’ s to help promote music in my hometown . I ’ m a big advocate for a lot of the stuff at the artPARK and the Pomerene Center . We need at least six musicians so far because every orchestra needs at least six . We are having open rehearsals . We need keyboard players , a drum set and four to five horns , trumpet , saxophone , trombone and clarinet .”

She is interested in young musicians who are interested in pursuing music in a more professional way . That would include playing in the Aug . 13 concert .
The ensemble meets every Saturday at 10 a . m . The group members so far are all recently graduated from high school or in college . Their music is from the American Song Book , featuring “ String of Pearls ” ( a big band and jazz standard ), “ All of Me ” ( a popular jazz tune from 1931 ), “ April in Paris ” and some Bosa Nova tunes .
“ It ’ s sort of a mix ,” Hardesty said . “ Right now we are waiting on sheet music from The Real Book .”
