It ’ s full steam ahead at power association show

The Tuscarawas Valley Pioneer Power Association has been hosting an annual steam show at the Tuscarawas County Fairgrounds since 1964 , and this year ’ s show will be held Aug . 18 , 19 and 20 beginning at 8 a . m .
TVPPA President Emily Weldon said the show has held the interest of the public since the first in 1964 .
“ It ’ s generational . Many of the members we have are the fifth generation who have been doing this ,” said Weldon , a fourth-generation member .
Weldon remembers coming to the show as a child . “ It has broad appeal for all ages . Grandparents bring their grandkids to the show , and then they bring their own kids as adults ,” she said .
This year ’ s steam show will feature the products of John Deere , which is marking its 100th anniversary this year , and Russell and Company , a firm which did business in Massillon in the late 19th and early 20th centuries , producing thousands of steam tractors , engines and farm equipment .
“ There ’ s a surprising number of steam-powered machines still around ,” TVPPA member and show organizer Jeff McClenaghan said , “ even though a lot of it was scrapped for the metal during World War II .”

BF-73557 may be best for children . “ That ’ s the day of the pedal tractor pull for kids . There ’ s a lot for everyone the whole weekend , but there are some great things for kids to do Saturday especially ,” she said .
On display for the steam show will be tractors and equipment and the machinery that powered sawmills , hay balers and other necessary equipment before the coming of the internal combustion engine and electricity .
“ People really tend to just stare in amazement at some of these steam-powered machines ,” McClenaghan said . “ They like the way they look , and I think they ’ re surprised they ’ re still in operation . Kids especially seem to just be in awe when they see them and ask a lot of questions . It ’ s not every day you get to see a collection of steampowered equipment all in one place like this .”
Both Weldon and McClenaghan said the show attracts exhibitors and visitors from all over . “ We see people from all over Ohio and from out of the state ,” Weldon said .
“ It ’ s a popular hobby everywhere ,” McClenaghan said . “ In fact , there ’ s a book-length guide published every year that lists all the steam shows that are scheduled all over the United States , Canada , Europe , just about everywhere .”
The show this year also will offer lots of food to eat from vendors and a flea market . Friday night will feature a garden tractor pull . Each day of the show will offer something a little different .
Some of the members of TVPPA have been present since the creation . “ We have a few members who were there at that very first show and are still here and active today ,” Weldon said . “ This would be our 60th annual show if we hadn ’ t missed 2020 .”
Tickets are $ 7 at the gate , with children 12 and under admitted free . Though the show opens at 8 a . m . each day , it continues until late evening . Learn more about Tuscarawas Valley Pioneer Power Association at www . doversteamshow . com .
