Perry Chapel Baptist offers Backyard Bible Camps

By Jen Jones
Perry Chapel Baptist Church ’ s youth group usually plans a mission trip or a conference each year . Thanks to COVID , alternate plans had to be considered , as the church wasn ’ t sure what the guidelines would be for this summer . Instead , they held Mission Critical , a three-day event that drew about 90 teens from several counties , and they held Backyard Bible Camps .
Carol Kinsey said , “ Mission Critical teaches the youth that they can be missionaries in their own communities . Five girls from our youth group wrote the curriculum they are using for our Backyard Bible Camps . The kids have a Bible lesson , games , snacks and a craft . And since we didn ’ t have to spend a large amount on the curriculum , we could buy backpacks and Bibles for each child that attended .”
The camps were held in Bladensburg , Warsaw and two days at Perry Chapel . On Friday , July 16 ,

Perry Chapel Baptist Church held several Backyard Bible Camps instead of its Vacation Bible School , due to COVID concerns . At this camp , held July 12 at Warsaw Park , children walked on a cross between two hula hoops to remind them to stay strong with God .
Logos Academy presented “ Behold He Cometh ” at the church for the community . On Sunday , Aug . 8 , the youth group will lead the service at the church .
Lauren Killiany was one of the youth who helped design the curriculum the group used . “ Our church got hit hard with COVID . It was discouraging that no kids were coming . These camps were super encouraging to me . To invite the community kids and help teach younger kids about Jesus is super important . My Christianity is so important to me , and I want to share it .”
Teen volunteer Joci Totten said , “ I love kids .
I love being part of our church , and it ’ s awesome to be able to tell kids about Jesus . I like that we have our own curriculum . We can adapt what we are doing for each age group so they can all understand .”
One of the activities the youth taught involved two hula hoops and a large wooden cross . They used the hula hoops to show how sin pushes people away from God . After laying the hula hoops on the ground , the cross was laid across both as a bridge . The children could easily see how leaning on God ( the cross ) could bring them closer to God .
Madyson Holand enjoyed helping with the crafts . “ I like helping , and I like to paint . They have painted flower pots and sun catchers .”
Kay Stimpert also helped with crafts . “ I really enjoy seeing bright smiles on the kids ’ faces . Our youth group is like family ; doing this is like helping family .”

was the title of one of the classes created by Molly Shupert . “ It ’ s helping kids understand how to grow in God . They have to be with other believers , read their Bibles and pray . The craft with this camp is painting flower pots , and then a plant will be put in . Taking care of the plant helps them remember they are like plants and need to grow closer to God .
“ It ’ s so amazing to be able to serve and see the impact we are having , especially since I want to be a teacher . Working with kids is what I love ; it makes me happy .”
Von Kinsey is the director of the youth and children ’ s ministries at the church . “ The youth learn about Jesus , but if they don ’ t use what they learn , it will go to waste . God said to share the good news of Jesus . Youth don ’ t always get to serve or share , and this lets them do both .”
