Let ’ s talk about child immunizations
I ’ m Cindy Hilbish , WIC director with Coshocton County Health Department . It ’ s a super important time of year to talk about child immunizations with only a month or so to go before school starts back up .
Per the American Academy of Pediatrics website at www . healthychildren . org , the recommended schedule of immunizations has been researched and carefully timed to provide protection when children are most vulnerable and when the vaccines will produce the strongest response from your child ’ s immune system .
Vaccines are simply the best way to protect our children from these viruses and bacteria that can cause real and devastating harm .

Just as you would never leave home without buckling your child into a car seat , vaccines will protect your child from infectious diseases that are impossible to anticipate :
Hepatitis A and hepatitis B vaccines protect against serious liver diseases .
Rotavirus vaccine protects against the most common cause of diarrhea and vomiting in infants and young children . Rotavirus is the most common cause of hospitalizations in young infants .
DTaP and Tdap vaccines protect against diphtheria , tetanus ( lockjaw ) and pertussis ( whooping cough ).
Hib vaccine protects against Haemophilus influenzae type B ( a cause of spinal meningitis ).
Pneumococcal vaccine protects against bacterial meningitis and infections of the blood .
Polio vaccine protects against a crippling viral disease that can cause paralysis .
MMR vaccine protects against measles , mumps and rubella ( German measles ), all highly contagious and potentially very serious diseases .
Varicella vaccine protects against chickenpox and its many complications including flesh-eating strep , staph toxic shock and encephalitis ( an inflammation of the brain ).
