living away from home,” said Jenny Strickler, extension educator, 4-H youth development for Ohio State University Extension Coshocton County.“ They learn responsibility, teamwork and how to appreciate nature. They have a ton of fun and get to participate in activities they might not experience otherwise.
“ They get to be independent but also learn how to take care of themselves and the environment around them. They make amazing connections with the teen
counselors and have memories that will last a lifetime.”
Jennifer Massie had two at camp this year: Layton, 17, and Laramie, 10. She said,“ Layton was a counselor and said he loves getting to know the kids and helping them have a good time like he did when he was their age. Laramie liked getting wet while kayaking and turning in lost name tags of counselors, so they had to do funny things at mealtimes to earn them back.”
Ashley Thomas said her son Miles, 15, was a first-year counselor at camp.
“ He enjoyed being a counselor and getting to participate in the behind the scenes and make camp fun for the younger kids,” she said.“ Though it brought him great tiredness, he enjoyed camp.”
Celia Buxton, 12, liked slingshot and flying squirrel and had an awesome time at 4-H Camp.
Allie Miller, 10, went and loved everything, especially flying squirrel and playing nine square.
Parker Wesney, 9, loved the outdoor recreation sessions of fishing and creeking. He enjoyed spending time with his buddies and meeting new kids. He also was able to learn new line dances.
Sophia Sellers, 12, went to camp because it’ s fun and a great bonding experience with friends.“ You meet a lot of people, and everyone is really nice there,” she said.“ My favorite part was the dance held on the final night, hanging with friends and the talent show.”
The Earl Patterson Memorial Fund provided camp scholarships, and the 4-H Advisory Committee and The Coshocton County Youth Financial Support Committee provided discounted camper fees for all in attendance.
