SATURDAY , JULY 3 , 1971 Simco Peabody has begun the process of moving its massive shovel known as Big Chief through southern Coshocton County . The 3,000-ton shovel , one of the largest in the world , will take nearly a month to reach Franklin Township . “ Depending upon the terrain , we may be able to make as much as four tenths of a mile an hour ,” a spokesman said . Today it will be travelling across Ohio Route 76 . One of the toughest challenges facing the crew will be Wills Creek , which will have to be temporarily dammed in order for the massive machine to cross .
SUNDAY , JULY 12 , 1981 Joel L . Hampton will be the Roscoe Foundation ’ s new executive director . Hampton has served in a variety of management and sales roles for a number of different business , clubs and other organizations , and he will be coming directly from serving as South Euclid ’ s Mayfield Country Club ’ s general manager . He will be replacing Jack A . Beals , who is retiring after having served as executive director for the past nine years . Beals , originally from Lisbon Falls in Maine , came to Coshocton in 1949 as a finance manager for the local GE plant ’ s laminated and insulating products department . He retired from GE in 1972 . Over the years he has been active in scouting , the Rotary Club and a wide variety of other community programs and organizations .
SUNDAY , JULY 14 , 1991 Lane ’ s Beverage Lane in the Downtowner Plaza is under new ownership , and a new name . “ We ’ re keeping the game room and plan to add new product lines ,” said Todd Shields of Warsaw . He along with Debbi Richards , also from Warsaw , and Berl Cavinnee of Columbus purchased Lane ’ s and renamed it D . J .’ s Beverage Lane . Renovations of the space are underway and will feature a bar and restaurant . In addition to the renovations an expanded inventory of soft drinks and alcohol will also be featured , and the Ohio Lottery will be available for sale .
MONDAY , JULY 9 , 2001 River View High School junior , Natassja Miller will be going to Australia to represent Ohio and the US in the 2001 Gold Coast Challenge . The 16-year-old Rising Tide swimmer will be travelling down under on July 18th with 19 other fellow Americans to compete on the 28th in Sydney . “ I know it will be a wonderful opportunity for her , but I will miss her and be excited and worried for her the whole time she ’ s gone ,” her mother Renee Miller said . Natassja will be swimming the 200-meter backstroke as well as the 100-meter freestyle . She may also be swimming on the relay team if she qualifies .
WEDNESDAY , JULY 13 , 2011 A large crowd gathered at the Airport Amphitheater on July 2 for a free concert by the United States Army Field Band and the Volunteers . The Volunteers is fronted by Sergeant First Class April Wright Boucher who is a native of Coshocton , and 1991 graduate of CHS . “ Tonight , we ’ re going to perform everything from classic country to some of the modern hits that are out there on the radio and then toward the end we ’ ll honor our veterans with some patriotic music ,” Boucher said . Veterans were asked to stand and be recognized as the band played the official song of each of the five branches .
