Boomers recall how summer fun has changed

Forrest Hill Lake brings back a lot of memories for Baby Boomers .

For many families , summer means travel ball , vacations , Scout or sport camps and many other places they need to be . For the Boomer generation , summer meant work , but it also was a simpler time , and there was plenty of time to daydream or hang out with friends .
Kim Lancaster Gress remembers playing flashlight tag every night . Jay Sycks , Terri Brenneman Derby , Cheryl Nelson and Quent Burris remember cruising Main Street and listening to the radio . Derby also has fond memories of penny candy from Ritchie ’ s Carryout on Seventh Street , catching lightning bugs , playing hide and seek until the street lights came on , drinking water from the hose so they didn ’ t have to go in the house , and going to the Pastime Theater for afternoon movies .
Robin Snider liked going to Forrest Hill Lake . Dan Helmick spent part of his summers groundhog hunting . Gaye Johnson Morgan remembers going hiking in the woods with friends . Philip H . Hunt said he spent his summers mowing the lawn , cleaning house , ironing and the summer band program at school .

everywhere , and they had to be home by dark . She gathered pop bottles and turned them in at the local mom and pop and bought candy . She made potholders and sold them in the neighborhood . “ Went swimming in our creek , hiked in the woods , played with the neighbor kids ,” she said .
Dick Cushman has many happy memories of summer growing up in Coshocton . “ Cruising Main Street , driving out to the strip mines and partying , hanging out at The Freeze , dirt bike racing in the Red Sea , swimming at Avondale Pool or Forrest Hill Lake , partying behind Lincoln Elementary School , building tree forts in the woods about Pleasant Valley Road , going to the Youth Center dances at the old high school turned middle school that has since been torn down , watching movies at the Pastime Theater and marveling at the mirrors that reflected to infinity , eating late night subs at The Sub Shop in the alley , ice cream cones from Paul ’ s Dairy Delight , playing ball at the Himebaugh lot , putting coins on train tracks , catching lightning bugs .”
Susan Grancey said her summers were full of swimming at Lake Park in the lake and going to drive-in movies

Wayne ’ s Freeze was a favorite hangout of Mike Crown and his friends . He also remembers “ Cruising Main Street with 8 tracks blaring music from Craig speakers , swimming at Forrest Hill Lake , doing donuts in beater cars in the strip mines , drinking 3.2 beer , visiting Mary Stockum ’ s grave , canoe trips down the mighty Walhonding River , eating foot-long coneys and drinking frosted mugs of root beer at Jolly ’ s Drive-In .”
Barbara Bonenberger also remembers the foot-long hot dogs from A & W . “ And The Freeze on Chestnut ( chicken sandwiches ), swimming at Barth Lake , frozen Milky Way , Gardenia Pizza — great memories all around . Wish kids these days could experience our childhood .”
