Summer events bring back memories

By Josie Sellers
Events have changed over the years , and some have even been canceled . However , there are others from Baby Boomer ’ s youth that are still going strong .
When Cynthia Abood thinks of summer events from the past , Canal Days comes to mind .
“ I loved dressing in costume and entering the contests ,” she said . “ My youngest son , Evan , was the first Canal Days junior king when he was 3 .”
While Canal Days is no longer held , the Bakersville Homecoming still is .
“ Up here it ’ s a red letter on the calendar holiday ,” Larry Stahl said . “ Cows are milked at odd hours , tractors pull for three days , homemade pie and barbecued chicken , fellowship and friendship .”
Others couldn ’ t wait to head to camp when summertime came .
“ Scout camp for the experience of camping , training and socializing ,” Tom Dile said .
Gail Littler Piper couldn ’ t wait to go to 4-H Camp .
“ It was a great time to do something different , meet other people , learn new activities and much more ,” she said . “ I was a camper many years and a counselor when I was older . I didn ’ t grow up in Coshocton County , so I went to Camp Whitewood instead of Camp
Ohio , but it was pretty much the same .”
Karen Chanay first went to 4-H Camp as a young child .
“ I went with my mom when I was 5 and was hooked ,” she said . “ I never missed a chance to attend 4-H Camp , either as a camper or as a counselor . One summer I even worked there in the kitchen .”
Emily Gephart spent her time at Camp Ohio .
“ I enjoyed meeting up with old friends and making new ones ,” she said . “ An added bonus was one week away from the farm , no milking cows , no hay to bale , no fence to mend , only fun for a week .”

The time of day you exercise does make a difference

We all know we need to exercise . In the winter we have the excuse of it being too cold , snow or slippery conditions . In the summer we have heat and humidity as an excuse . We have many excuses but lack the resolve , the initiative or discipline to take the
time to take care of our bodies .
Perhaps this will help you to focus on what you anticipate exercise will do for you . For instance , did you know the time of day you exercise makes a difference in your results ?
OK , so when do we exercise ? Frontiers in Physiology ( May 31 , 2022 ) reported a study by Skidmore College ’ s Human Nutrition and Metabolism Laboratory . The original goal of

Larry Stahl shared this picture that Becky Geese Frame took at a past Bakersville Homecoming .
this study was to test a unique fitness program with a group of healthy , fit and extremely active adults in early middle age . Given known sex differences in response to exercise training , this study quantified health
and performance outcomes in separate groups of women and men .
The study made a significant — though accidental — discovery about the time of day you exer-
