Two weeks on from the fire that claimed the Park Hotel, neighboring businesses are still waiting on word when they can safely reopen. Demolition efforts were halted following the discovery of asbestos, with
the Coshocton Department of Health preparing paperwork for owner Jerry Zwelling in accordance with EPA rules regarding the removal of the hazardous material.
In the meantime Fire Chief Michael Layton
and his crew are spraying down the rubble to prevent the asbestos from being picked up by the wind. As a consequence, the nearby Antique Mall’ s basement is experiencing flooding. Roma’ s Florist and Gifts and Forbes’ Furniture
and Design have reopened, but the hotel’ s wreckage is still a problem for them.
“ We’ re trying to do business on a 1 / 8 of a street scale. The sooner we get it open, the better for everyone,” Gary Forbes said.
