New storybook trail now open at Dillon State Park A new storybook trail is now open at Dillon State Park, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. Storybook trails present children’s books in a series of child-height panels to blend the fun of outdoor exploration with reading. “Visiting a storybook trail is a great opportunity for families to enjoy learning in the outdoors together,” ODNR director Mary Mertz said. “Kids of all ages will find fun and interactive ways to engage with these stories, all while discovering more about conservation and the natural world.” The new storybook trail at Dillon can be found along the Black Locust Trail, near the ball courts and beach area, and currently features the book, “Miss Maple’s Seeds,” by Eliza Wheeler. In this story the tiny but mighty Miss Maple adopts orphan seeds and cares for them in her maple tree all year until they can be planted in spring. Each colorful story panel along the half-mile paved trail is accompanied by fun facts, nature clues and activities. Trail-side panels encourage readers to make acorn cap whistles, dance like seeds on the wind or share their own stories of planting seeds. A Little Free Library complements the trail, and visitors can borrow books for free or donate books to the collection. All books for the trail’s opening were provided by School Rocks Party Box and Ali Michaels, a 10-year-old from Chapman Elementary School in Dublin. ODNR launched the storybook trail program in 2019 to promote the importance of literacy, a healthy lifestyle and connecting with nature. In addition to the program’s first trail at Alum Creek State Park and now Dillon, ODNR recently opened three more trails at John Bryan, Maumee Bay and Wingfoot state parks for a total of five storybook trails across the state. This year ODNR partnered with the Ohio Governor’s Imagination Library and Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library to provide story content for several trails and raise awareness of these resources for Ohio families. The Imagination Library provides one free book each month to children enrolled in the program from birth to age 5.
