COSHOCTON – The safety service committee at Hopewell Industries , Inc . does more than make sure those who work in the building are safe . It also reaches outside of the organization ’ s walls to help others .
On Wednesday , Dec . 28 , the committee hosted a blood drive and those who serve on it greeted donors at the door and made sure refreshments were available to them after they donated blood .
“ This is fun ,” said Jessie Gilcrest , who manned the snack table . “ I love doing this .”
She serves as the secretary for the safety committee .
“ I wrote up the notes for the blood drive and it makes me feel good that I participated in it ,” Gilcrest said .
Another person who helped at the blood drive was Sarah Brady who is involved with RSVP and comes to Hopewell as a volunteer . She helps with the safety service committee that Brad Fuller coordinates , but also has a lot of experience working with the Red Cross on many levels .
“ I ’ ve been involved with the Red Cross since I moved here in 1973 with my husband ,” Brady said . “ I enjoy giving back to the community and helping meet the needs of the community and beyond with blood drives .”
Erin Unger has been a regular blood donor for 10-13 years .
“ I donate because when my dad got chemo he would receive platelets and blood so since he took , I give back ,” she said .
Blood donated at the drive was collected by The Central Ohio Blood Services Region , which is headquartered in Columbus . It serves 27 counties and 41 hospitals including Coshocton ’ s . The Central Ohio Blood Services Region website also states that 800 blood donors are needed daily in the region .
“ It ’ s not scary ( to donate ),” Unger said . “ It ’ s better than a shot because it doesn ’ t hurt afterwards . It ’ s just a pinch going in .”
Lyn Unger had come along with Erin for moral support . She ’ s been donating since high school , but couldn ’ t at the Dec . 28 drive because of a recent surgery .
“ I just want to help somebody ,” Lyn said .
