Safety tips to help on the farm during winter weather

Hello , Coshocton County ! I hope you ’ re all staying safe and warm with all the snow we ’ ve had so far this January . Personally , I like to stay indoors as much as possible , enjoying my favorite hobbies like reading a book or watching a movie while completing a puzzle with my family .
However , not all aspects of life come to a halt just because it ’ s cold and snowy outside . Farming is one of those things that doesn ’ t stop in the winter . Animals still need to be fed , chores need to be completed and equipment needs repairing .
While none of us are
strangers to Ohio ’ s cold winters , it ’ s important to periodically remind ourselves how to properly prepare our farms for such conditions .
— Take advantage of daylight : When the sun is out and temperatures are relatively warmer , use this time to winterize equipment and buildings . It ’ s also a good opportunity for routine maintenance to reduce the likelihood of breakdowns and repairs
when conditions worsen .
— Plan your day accordingly : The sun sets much earlier in winter . Starting your day early allows you to finish your work before dark , helping to prevent accidents .
— Monitor the weather : Keeping an eye on long-term weather forecasts is just as crucial in winter as it is in spring when planting crops . Mark drives and ponds when heavy snowfall is predicted to assist in navigating the farm safely when it ’ s covered in snow or ice .
— Create a winter survival kit for your farm : When conditions become
severe , you ’ ll want to make sure you already have everything you will need on hand . A good way to know what you have is to make a checklist for a survival kit . Things like food , water , medication , tools and extra clothing can be helpful to have when you are unable to leave the house or there is a power outage .
— Be prepared for the unexpected with livestock : Don ’ t wait until temperatures drop below freezing to purchase a water tank heater , or you might find empty shelves . Stock up on water tank heaters for when severe weather hits . If you ’ re farrowing , lambing
or kidding during this winter season , it ’ s wise to have a few heating lamps on hand as backup . Plan ahead for getting water to livestock in case of a power outage and have extra supplies of feed and bedding materials ready in case trips to town are not possible .
— Take care of yourself : Wear appropriate layers depending on the amount of physical labor to stay comfortable and ensure your head and hands are always warm . Investing in good work gear can be costly initially but proves useful through most seasons .
Remember to stay
hydrated and avoid over-exertion , even in the winter . Fuel your body with nutritious food and healthy meals . When using alternative power and heat sources , be mindful of carbon monoxide buildup and ensure plenty of ventilation . Lastly , always let someone know where you are working .
Being prepared increases safety , minimizes stress and ensures smooth operations in less-than-ideal circumstances . I encourage everyone , whether you live on a farm or not , to think of ways to stay safe and healthy during these cold days . Have a great and safe day and stay warm .
