Letter to the Editor

Page two of the Dec . 23 , 2021 , Beacon carried a wonderful story about Our Town Coshocton getting set to restore , not demolish , the 130-yearold Selby Building at 441 Main St ., Coshocton .
This is good news for the present time and for the future with what restoration of that big building could mean to revitalization of the downtown area .
The people involved with this big project have secured funding for a great start to the project . The next vital step , they have determined , is repairing / replacing the roof , which will protect the whole building project .
It is good they have recognized the next major step , tackling the roof .
Here ’ s my question : Is the next major problem , after the roof , the asbestos ? Over a year ago , I was talking with someone about restoring the building rather than tearing it down . They said , “ It ’ s full of asbestos .” That means it cannot be
restored , and it can ’ t even be demolished .
The article didn ’ t mention asbestos at all .
This reminds me of the Israelites when they were finally at the edge of the Promised Land after 40 years of wandering . They sent scouts down into the land . “ Oh no ,” they said , “ there are giants in this land . There ’ s no way we can conquer them and live there .” Then the leaders asked Caleb if he saw the giants when he went scouting the territory . Didn ’ t he say , “ Yeah , let ’ s go get ‘ em ”?
We need another Caleb , someone to say , “ Yes , we know about the asbestos problem . First , we tackle the roof problem to save the structure .”

Youth leadership meets with adults

On Dec . 14 the Coshocton County Youth Leadership group had a combined program day with Leadership Coshocton County . We met at M Event Centre and had breakfast provided by Schumaker Farms . We participated in a poverty simulation and Walk Across the Line team-building activity and got to learn about social services with a panel of professionals .
This program day was planned by Leadership Coshocton County members Jandi Adams , Leslie Fehrman Ridenbaugh and Jodi Shrimplin . Betsy Gosnell and Geno

Swigert helped the members in their activities .
The first activity we participated in was the poverty simulation , run by Kathy Rednour . Rednour is from the Lorain County Prosecutor ’ s Office . In the simulation members were split into groups and given a family background file . In the file we found out who we were , if we had a job and how much money we had to begin . Throughout the simulation we had to figure out how to “ live .” Children went to school , and you had to buy groceries and pay your bills . You also could go to jail for doing illegal things . The simulation was staffed by current and previous LCC members .
The second activity , Walk Across the Line , was where all members stood in a line and were given “ have you ” statements . If the statement applied to you , you walked across the line and turned back toward the others . The groups then ate lunch , provided by Warehouse Steak-n- Stein .
The last activity was a panel about social services in Coshocton . There were representatives from several offices who answered our questions and taught us more about services available in Coshocton .
Thank you to everyone who helped the groups at our program day . If you would like to know more or are interested in joining CCYL , call Betsy Gosnell , executive director , at 740-622-0010 .
