4-H Shooting Sports Program offers many lessons

The National 4-H Shooting Sports Program gives young people an opportunity to learn marksmanship , safe and responsible use of firearms , and principles of hunting and archery .
They have gone through extensive training to lead those classes so that everyone feels comfortable and safe in those environments .

“ We are a pretty rural area , so I think we are pretty familiar with that ,” said Jenny Strickler , 4-H educator for Coshocton County . “ But having that exposure to safe and responsible handling is what is vital to preventing accidents both in and out of the home . So that is our goal in the Shooting Sports Program to teach that proper use . Core concepts are to stress safety , decision making and personal responsibility .”
Archery is popular , and there are rifle and shotgun classes . “ They are pretty popular classes , and safety is the No . 1 stressor and how to properly use firearms ,” Strickler said . “ The instructors have had statewide training . They are certified 4-H volunteers , they have had background checks and an interview process , so they have gone through extensive training

F o r S h o t - gun I ( limit 10 ) members new to the Shotgun Shooting Sports classes , there will be eight classes on Tuesdays from 6-7 p . m . on April 2 , 9 , 16 , 23 and 30 and May 7 , 14
and 21 at the Coshocton Gun Club on 83 South . The cost is $ 37 per person , which includes the project book and insurance . Shotguns , ammunition and targets will be provided .
For Shotgun II ( limit 10 per class ), you must have completed Shotgun I class with a certificate . The eight classes will be at the Coshocton Gun Club on Tuesdays from 6-7 p . m . on June 4 , 11 , 18 and 25 and July 2 , 9 , 16 and 23 . The cost is $ 9 for your project book . You must provide your own factory-loaded ammunition , not reloads , and pay for clays as needed . You can use 4-H shotguns and safety equipment or use your own . Equipment must be inspected and approved .
A parent or guardian is required to stay .

Call the OSU Coshocton County Extension Office at 740-622-2265 to reserve a spot . A parent , guardian or adult relative is required to stay for all classes , unless other arrangements are made with the instructor . You do not need to be a 4-H member to participate . You may repeat a class with the permission of the instructor if the class size permits .
