Award given in honor of the late Don Carpenter

Don Carpenter spent his life serving others and is being remembered through a stewardship award presented by the IAFF Local 5078 Coshocton County Professional EMS Association .
Carpenter , who passed away Jan . 11 , 2021 , was drafted into the army and served in Vietnam . When he came home , he got a job at Given-Dawson Funeral Home and became one of the first three nationally registered EMTs in the county . He was a sergeant with the sheriff ’ s office , was in the
Quincy Hains of West Lafayette was named to the dean ’ s list at Capital University for the fall semester .
In order to be named to the dean ’ s list , full-time students must have achieved a GPA of 3.5-3.69 .
National Guard , was a volunteer at the Coshocton and Walhonding Valley fire departments , ran squad for Coshocton County Emergency Medical Services , and worked at Akron Children ’ s Hospital . He volunteered for the Red Cross and the Hope Clinic .
“ Don never knew a stranger and was always willing to give a hand to anyone that needed it ,” his wife Donna Carpenter said . “ He didn ’ t see the things he did as a big deal , but everybody else did . When he had his heart attack in 2010 and retired , it crushed him , but he still volunteered . He was one of a kind , and we miss him tremendously . If it wasn ’ t for EMS , I never would have met Don .”
The first recipient of the Don Carpenter Stewardship Award was Chip Udischas . He received the honor at the union Christmas dinner in December 2023 . The award is designed to recognize someone not affiliated with the union , but who goes above and beyond for EMS . Udischas is a part-time employee and not eligible for the union .

Katey Hardesty of Coshocton was named to the provost ’ s list for the fall semester .
To be named to the provost ’ s list , fulltime students must have achieved a GPA of 3.7-3.849 . name ,” Donna Carpenter said .
Udischas said his first memories of Don and EMS are from when he was 16 years old and part of the Explorer Program .
“ Don was easy to look up to ,” Udischas said . “ He had worked at the sheriff ’ s office , he was a firefighter , retired from the military and was a very good EMT . He was the first person I knew that had been a responder with all three affiliations , as well as military service . On top of being a first responder to look up to , Don was also a great guy to be around . He was kind , willing to help or give advice if he saw the need , and seemed to want to lift others up to be better . To sum it up , Don was a very honorable man and a very good role model .”
Udischas was honored and humbled to receive the award .
“ Our local EMS system is full of people who truly care about their jobs ,

and we are blessed to have them ,” he said . “ I consider myself fortunate to be a small part of the organization that is always there when the need arises .”
