Coshocton ’ s Stone Container mill has a new general manager following the promotion of Bernard Bamer to the position of vice-president of corporate engineering and his transfer to company headquarters in Chicago . David Hutchinson will be taking over the position of general manager . Hutchinson has been with the Coshocton mill since 1970 but has been in the paper industry since 1955 .

The family of the late Walter H . Pomerene , who passed away Thursday , announced that his invention , “ The Coshocton Wheel ” will serve as his memorial . The Coshocton native was born in 1895 and graduated from CHS before attending the Ohio State University . While working for the North Appalachian Experimental Watershed Pomerene designed a tool which both collects water runoff samples and separates them into solids and liquids . The instrument simplified and cutdown on the labor and manpower intensive process which was previously done with massive concrete troughs . Pomerene would retire in 1955 , having not only created an important tool which sees use across the world , but donated the land which would become the Pomerene Forest Ohio State University Lab , previously a farm he owned on Route 3 .

Coshocton , and the rest of the Midwest , has been hit by near record snowfall and low temperatures , with a state of emergency being declared by the county ’ s commissioners . According to Mayor Dan Moody 700 tons of the county ’ s salt bins ’ 1700 tons has been used . Sheriff Corbett issued an emergency order to close all roads in the county on Wednesday , but the roads have since been reopened . The snowstorm has caused the closure of county schools , with the storm hitting just two days into Charles Bethel ’ s tenure as River View ’ s new superintendent .

With the new year comes new county officials . Mayor Tim Turner will begin his term on Friday , replacing the outgoing Mayor Brad Haynes . Coshocton also receives a new fire chief , with Michael Layton replacing the mayor ’ s younger brother , Chief Charles Turner Jr . Chief Turner joined the West Lafayette Fire Department in 1987 and took on the position of Coshocton City Fire Chief in 1996 . One of the first orders of business will be tomorrow ’ s City Council meeting , where a new clerk of council will be selected .

The Walhonding Valley Fire District will soon see its first , and only , chairman retire . Alan Donaker joined the fire district when it was created 30 years ago and is the last of the district ’ s founding members still active within it . The Walhonding Valley Fire District is the largest in the state serving Warsaw , Nellie and nine townships . “ We faced many challenges in the beginning . One challenge was that we didn ’ t have a fire truck that was newer than 30 years old . Now our oldest truck is 22 years old , and it will be replaced in early 2014 ,” said Donaker . He then commented that he has been fortunate to serve with many dedicated women and men through the years , and that he will miss being a part of the team and serving the residents .
