Fundraisers planned for West Lafayette ’ s K-9 program

By Josie Sellers
The community is continuing to rally together to help the West Lafayette Police Department add a K-9 officer . Multiple fundraisers are planned for the month of February , and monetary donations are being accepted at two different locations .
The fundraising efforts will start Friday , Feb . 12 from 8:30 a . m . to 5 p . m . with the Valentine ’ s Day Puppy Love Bake Sale at Hickory Flats Golf Course . Preorder to-go boxes or stop by and buy some treats .
“ If you live in the village limits , you can have your goodies delivered by the ( Ridgewood ) girls soccer team ,” said Nikia Campbell , who is coordinating the event . “ You can come out and pick them up too , and we also will have golf-course specials on sale .”
Premade variety boxes of cookies , chocolates , cupcakes and candy will come in three sizes with costs being $ 5 , $ 10 and $ 20 .
“ We also are going to do puppy boxes for a $ 10 donation so you can get cookies for your fur babies ,” Campbell said . “ I ’ m making pumpkin peanut butter cookies for the fur kids that I ’ ll have mine taste test them .”
You can preorder on
the event Facebook page or by calling Campbell at 740-610-7138 or Jessie Tubbs at 740-610-7433 .
The sweet treats for the sale are being donated by friends of the village , and Campbell said Hickory Flats , where she works , also is doing some baking .
“ There will be lots of great bakers — Katie Hultz , Jessi Shrock , Roberta Cramer , Ava Kulbacki — with hot chocolate bombs ,” Tubbs said .
Anyone interested in donating can drop off their baked goods at the golf course Monday through Thursday , Feb . 8-11 .
“ That way we can get them all ready to go Friday morning ( Feb . 12 ),” Campbell said .
Campbell is impressed with how giving everyone has been .
“ West Lafayette is such a small community , but we always try to help each other out ,” Campbell said . “ It doesn ’ t matter what is going on , and we should always back our blue .”
On Saturday , Feb . 13 from 5-7 p . m ., Mint Ivy Boutique will host a Ladies Night Out – Round up for WLPD K9 . They plan to donate a set amount of money for each puppy Warmies sold . Customers also will have the option to round up their purchase , and there will be a donation jar set out . Special

On Saturday , Feb . 27 , Burt Park will be the starting point for This 5k is for the Dogs . The 5k is $ 25 per runner , and there is a 1-mile puppy run for kids .
The first 50 entries in the race are guaranteed a T-shirt . Awards will go to the top male and female per age group . The big dog race is 3.1 miles around the Village of West Lafayette . A 1-mile Puppy Chase for the kids is $ 10 . For online registration , visit the event Facebook page before midnight on Saturday , Feb . 20 . Raceday registration will be
$ 30 cash or check . The 5k is sponsored by Kevin Cox Law and Kyle Libby State Farm .
“ Brittleigh Smith helped tremendously with set-up and organization of the 5k , as she has done so many 5ks from her work with Habitat ,” Tubbs said .
A silent auction also will be held at Burt Park on the day of the race . Final bids for items will be accepted at 11 a . m . All gifts can be viewed on the Facebook group , WLPD K-9 Silent Auction .
Kristina Alan is coordinating the auction and has been overwhelmed with the community ’ s response .
“ We were going to pick
up everything in one day , but we ’ ve gotten so much response we had to start scheduling pickups ,” Alan said .
Alan has picked up $ 1,600 worth of items so far and still has several more donations to get .
“ It ’ s been really awesome , and I ’ m really impressed ,” Alan said . “ I thought with COVID and us being a small community I ’ d get a few things here and there .”
Alan was a little worried but had no reason to be .
“ The mayor ’ s office in Coshocton donated . The sheriff ’ s office donated . Several small organizations , Scout troops and individuals have donated ,” Alan said . “ People are thinking outside of the box too .”
Winners will be announced after the race , and they must be present to win . The baskets will be set up in the building at Burt Park so people can watch their bids . The minimum bid will be 50 % of the value of the basket .
“ We ’ ve had several businesses donate things valued over $ 100 ,” Alan said . “ I was expecting $ 10 or $ 20 gift cards . Smaller items we do get donated we might group together into baskets to make them worth a little more . There will be something for
everyone , and I ’ m working on kids baskets . We are just doing whatever we can to help raise the funds .”
A half hog raffle will follow the 5k and silent auction . Final tickets for this will be sold at 11 a . m . There will be two chances to win a half a hog and processing from Baltic Meats , which coordinated with Jason Blevens of JB Smoking BBQ .
T-shirts also are being ordered to support the K9 fund . Order forms are available in West Lafayette at The Home Loan Savings Bank ( ask for Kaycee ) and Minty Ivy Boutique . They are $ 10 for youth small to adult XL or $ 15 for 2XL-4XL .
Another way to support the cause is to simply make a monetary donation . Checks made out to the Village of West Lafayette with K-9 in the memo line can be placed in the village administration office drop box . Cash donations are accepted at The Home Loan Savings Bank in West Lafayette .
“ We have some really amazing community members and so much support for Chief Fohl and our WLPD ,” Tubbs said .
West Lafayette Police Chief Matthew Fohl selected the K9 handler
