and Josh and Amber Henderson were named the Outstanding Conservation Farm. A new award for
2019, The Friend of Conservation was awarded to Nathan McNeal for his dedication to agricultural
education.
Conservation “Boots on the Ground”
One of the secrets of the SWCD program since its beginning is technicians working one-on-one
with landowners to solve soil and water resource concerns. This can be something as simple
as looking at drainage issues to much larger projects involving animal waste systems or spring
developments. The Coshocton SWCD also works with the Natural Resources Conservation Service
(NRCS) to provide cost-share funds for conservation practices. During 2019, over $500,000 was
appropriated to Coshocton County landowners for installation of practices through NRCS.
2019 was a stellar year for getting cost share approved for Coshocton County Landowners.
Besides the cover crop program, a number of landowners were approved for Environmental Quality
Incentives Program (EQIP) contracts through NRCS. Several landowners jumped on projects right
away in the fall of 2019 and 2 spring developments, 5 watering facilities, 2,408 feet of pipeline, 1
heavy use pad, 3,610 feet of fence, and 500 feet of access road were installed before the first of
the year. This is only a small portion of the contracted practices to be installed over the next 5 years
through the EQIP program. Technicians have also been working with NRCS to take applications for
EQIP in 2020, and there has been great interest in signing up to install practices. Although we don’t
know what will be approved for cost share in 2020, there is the potential for another big year for
Coshocton County landowners. Also, we had 4 engineering plans; Land Smoothing, Blind Inlet, and
2 spring developments that were designed through our office at no cost to landowners. Of these
plans one spring development with pipeline and waterling facility was installed before the end of the
year. Technicians look forward to building on this 2019 success going into 2020.
Josh and Amber Henderson were awarded the 2019 Outstanding
Conservation Farmer at the SWCD Annual Meeting and Banquet in
October. They are shown with Board Supervisor Kristy Leindecker.
