CCCC offers sophomore visitation day

Emily Tatro ’ s visit to the Coshocton County Career Center two years ago helped her start planning her career path . On Feb . 11 she was able to assist the current group of county sophomores with their own journey .

“ When I came my sophomore year and saw the criminal justice program , I knew I wanted to go into law enforcement ,” said Tatro , who is a senior at the CCCC . “ After high school I ’ m going to go into corrections . I already put in a job application at the new jail . When I turn 21 , I want to go to the academy and eventually make my way to SWAT .”
Tatro was one of several CCCC students who helped lead 10th-graders around during sophomore visitation day and shared information about programs .

We want to give students the opportunity to come out here and see if the career center will be a good fit for them and introduce them to all we have to offer .”

“ I ’ ve learned so much here ,” she said . “ I ’ ve learned self-defense ,

how to handle a gun , how to handcuff someone and done traffic stops . We have a lot of fun here too , and the labs prepare you for the real world .”
Construction technology senior Danika Bertschy-Vickers also fell in love with the career center after visiting in eighth grade and her sophomore year .
“ It ’ s very welcoming ,” she said .
Bertschy-Vickers plans to be an EMT and use her construction skills on the side .
“ We ’ ve built chicken coops here , and I ’ d really like to build customized ones ,” she said . “ I enjoy doing what we do here .”
Bertschy-Vickers encouraged the sophomores to have an open mind .
“ I walked in here expecting to do criminal justice , but when I saw construction technology and thought about how much I like arts and crafts , I picked it . Keep an open mind and you might just do something different ,” she said . Early education instructor Megan Grimm had her students walk the visiting sophomores through various activities .
“ We are trying to mimic a day in preschool ,” she said . “ We do a lot of hands-on and play-based learning .”
Grimm made sure their visitors learned about College Credit Plus options and certificates they can earn that can help them go right into employment after high school .

“ I ’ ve been here 15 years ,” she said . “ We ’ ve gotten new programs over the years and done a lot of work-based learning . Coshocton County really supports us , and businesses help us get the kids on the job learning .”
In the cosmetology department , junior Jerica Miller was demonstrating how to do barrel curls .
“ They can be hard , but they are fun to do once you get the hang of it ,” she said .
Coshocton High School sophomores Ember Rochester and Grace Ray both enjoyed their visit to the career center and would like to attend there next year .
“ I like the labs ,” Rochester said .
She is considering studying culinary arts or business , and Ray is thinking about culinary arts or cosmetology .
“ Everything has been really interactive , and the students have been excited to answer our questions ,” Ray said .
Culinary arts senior Nancy Fouse said their work is very hands-on , and they learn a lot about customer service .
Superintendent Matt Colvin said 317 sophomores were invited to come tour the career center on Feb . 11 .
“ We want to give students the opportunity to come out here and see if the career center will be a good fit for them and introduce them to all we have to offer ,” he said . “ Us and all of the county schools want to put students in the best possible situations to help them become successful .”
