Library program takes you back to the good old days

By Marianne Austin For The Beacon
Coshocton librarian Kelly McCorkle ’ s Totally Retro program was a look back at the good old days , along with some interesting facts .
McCorkle gave clues about retro places and things such as a grocery store chain founded in 1859 with a very long history that drove many independently owned grocery stores out of business , sold coffee and tea , and pioneered the use of generic brands for cost cutting . Several people said the A & P and remembered shopping there .
“ Did anyone ever work in an office setting ? What was the first mechanical device invented in 1888 , and it used physical punch cards ?” McCorkle said .
A time clock was the answer .

Teflon was accidentally discovered in 1938 and trademarked in 1945 . Teflon was used on cookware and fabric .
White-out was invented by an artist , a woman who mixed up some white paint for when she made a mistake on the typewriter and passed the idea along to her co-workers . They saved their old fingernail polish bottles to put the white paint in , and they could use the brush for corrections .
This item was created in 1923 and sold to Kraft Foods in 1927 . It was advertised as a nutrientrich food . Its popularity soared from the ‘ 30s to the ‘ 50s . Velveeta cheese in the ‘ 50s , the liquid gold , became available in
