FFA provides many opportunities for students

By Marianne Austin
FFA is an organization that changes lives and prepares members for leadership , personal growth and career success through an agricultural education . FFA chapters may be chartered in any public school with an agricultural education program .
The agriculture teacher and advisor for the River View chapter is Alyssa Mullett . She has held this position since 2012 and is a graduate of River View High School as well . Leadership also is provided by student officers who are elected each year by the chapter ’ s members .
“ FFA offers a lot of different projects , entrepreneur-type projects , raising crops and several job-placement units where they work for someone in an ag-related field developing skills in different areas ,” Mullett said . “ Several River View students work at dairy farms in the county . “ The hog co-op is where students together can raise a group of pigs , do all of the management things throughout the summer , and take those pigs and animals to the fair in October ,” Mullett said . “ The chicken co-op is very similar to the hogs . The students pool their money
together and raise a group of chickens — market broilers that they can take to the fair for FFA as well . They keep records for finances such as feed and learn how to budget their project with their school advisor , and a support group from Walhonding Valley Farmers partners with them to lend support with some of the capital .
“ They keep records for their project and can use
their records to apply for a Proficiency Award as well as their State Degree and American Degree , the degrees that are offered through the FFA organization .”
