In the first half of this school year , students learned how to safely climb , trim and prune trees .
FFA and natural resources class go together well

This is the first year Marcus Olinger has taught the natural resources class at the Coshocton County Career Center . He also is the FFA advisor for the school .
“ Many of the topics we study in class are FFA related , and we get the opportunity to learn those things , then go compete in FFA CDA events that relate to our classroom topics ,” Olinger said .
Olinger said in the first half of this school year , students learned how to safely climb , trim and prune trees . “ We have gone out into the community and helped the City of Coshocton , Clary Gardens and Lake Park with trimming and pruning as a community service project ,” he said .
The second half of the school year , students have received their trappers education certification and are working on forklift certification .
“ Later in the year , students will receive OSHA training and will also be learning to work with heavy equipment . I have several students interested in becoming heavy equipment operators , as well as a few that are interested in joining the timber industry ,” Olinger said .
There are 16 students involved in FFA at the Coshocton County Career Center .
“ We compete in FFA Career Development Education activities ,” Olinger said . “ This past fall we competed in the FFA Forestry Competition and finished in first place in the district . This spring we will compete in the Wildlife Competition and the Envirothon Competition . We also do a fruit sale fundraiser each year . In addition , students will be leading FFA activities at the school the week of Feb . 20 for FFA Week .
“ FFA is important to us at the Coshocton County Career Center because it allows students to learn a variety of different things . Students learn parliamentary procedure and how to properly run a meeting . Our kids learn about the importance of leadership , and students have various leadership roles through FFA . We also get to compete in different FFA events that teach teamwork and build camaraderie .”
