NEW CONCORD - Games By Teens , the eighth annual computer programming contest hosted by Muskingum University Assistant Professor Jay Shaffstall , completed with three winners , Jonah Gahagan – first place , Thomas Jones – second place , and Robert Shoemaker – third place .
Games By Teens gives local area teens a chance to program a computer game , even if they have had no experience programming . A love of games and comfort with computers is all that is required . Shaffstall said , “ I created this contest to give kids a chance to explore computer programming in a way that really relates to them , games . Some kids never get a chance to try computer programming and thereby never know if it ’ s something they are naturally gifted in or even like . The job market in the near future is exploding wide open for computer programmers , and I feel it important to give kids a glimpse into a possible future in this field which will be in high demand when they are ready to enter the work force .”

This year ’ s Games By Teens winners were : Jonah Gahagan , Thomas Jones and Robert Shoemaker .
then meet two more times for working sessions with Professor Shaffstall to receive advice . Submissions are judged by an array of local and distance experts including a professional game development company , 1st Playable Productions , based in Troy , New York . These are working professionals in the game design industry who also provide positive feedback to each participant . Real world advice that adds extra value to the Games By Teens experience .
Shaffstall said , “ It ’ s always exciting to see what participants create . There is a general theme each year that must be worked into the game design , but other than that each game is a unique idea created from start to finish resulting in a playable game . Over the past eight years , I ’ ve seen really good games that are pretty fun to play . Yes , I do get to play them all , that ’ s a perk for me for running this contest .”
Jonah Gahagan , a homeschool teen , won first place with Plane Wars , a classic shooter , vintage plane game with the added twist of limited ammunition . In addition to a cash prize , he also won a $ 500 admissions scholarship to Muskingum University .
Thomas Jones , a homeschool teen , won second place with Cosmic Chaos , a fly around shooting chase game set in space .
Robert Shoemaker , a John Glenn High School teen , won third place with Block Chase , a maze game of escaping pursuing enemies .
