Forestry has been a focus for the career center students

Each year FFA chapters around the country celebrate National FFA Week as a time to share what impact it has on its members every day . Students at the Coshocton County Career Center focused on forestry earlier this school year .
“ The Coshocton County Career Center doesn ’ t have a huge role in FFA , but our first focus of the year is on the district forestry competition ,” natural resource instructor and FFA adviser Marcus Olinger said . “ We spent a lot of the first few weeks of
school prepping for that , learning how to identify trees , measure trees and different things outside . We do the competition at Port Clinton .”
Students from the career center have done well at the competition , finishing in the top three for the last three years .
“ It is kind of an early point of emphasis for us ,” Olinger said . “ The top four scores make up your school ’ s score . We have landed in the top three each year , so it ’ s been good for us . Coming up in March , we have the Southeast Ohio Invitational , where we will do two different events : wildlife management

“ Also , one of our big things is our FFA fundraiser this year . For the second year in a row , we have created our own deer corn mix . We have sold it to hunters and outdoor enthusiasts . It was a good experience research-wise for the kids and a successful fundraiser . We thought we would do something nontraditional that would be unique to us here at the career center . It helps pay for entry fees and going to state convention .”
Brodi Hardesty is president of the FFA chapter .
“ I just applied for the FFA State Degree ,” he said . “ I started FFA at Ridgewood High School . It ’ s a pretty big program over there . Ours here is smaller . We do multiple competitions each year at Ridgewood . I will do outdoor power ag mechanics this year . I placed the first two years in outdoor power and placed in ag at state too . Every senior has an opportunity to apply for their State Degree . We need so many volunteer hours and work hours . We have activities like competitions , FFA meetings , advisory and after-school stuff .”
Hardesty plans to become an arborist , specializing in the care and maintenance of trees .
