THURSDAY , FEB . 4 , 1971 The Ohio High Athletic Association ’ s February magazine will be coming shortly . Featuring state champions over the past school year , the CHS Golf Team has been given the back cover , and Dayton Chaminade , the basketball and baseball champs this year , will be on the front .
SUNDAY , FEB . 8 , 1981 Three hundred and seventy-five of the Annapolis Naval Academy ’ s midshipmen marched in President Reagan ’ s inaugural parade , and a Coshocton face was among them . Midshipman William J . Vargo , son of James T . and Toni J . Vargo , graduated from CHS in 1978 .
SUNDAY , FEB . 10 , 1991 The Reader ’ s Digest has announced its nominees for the 1991 American Heroes in Education Award , and a South Lawn teacher is amongst them . Fourth grade teacher , Janice Emler is the teacher nominated for the award . Nominated by her co-workers and Principal Sharon Foster , she could win $ 5,000 for herself and $ 10,000 for the school . During South Lawn ’ s recent Veteran ’ s Day activities , she organized an assembly where the students shared stories of their military family members . “ Throughout her 30-year career , she has dedicated herself to promoting and improving citizenship ,” Principle Foster said of Emler .
TUESDAY , FEB . 6 , 2001 The Pomerene Center for the Arts will be hosting its annual Chocolate Extravaganza fundraiser this Saturday . Sponsored by Miller ’ s Pharmacy and Dean ’ s Jewelry , this year part of the fundraiser will be going to the Chip Brown Memorial Fund .
WEDNESDAY , FEB . 9 , 2011 Zack Shaw has signed his letter of intent to play for Indiana University . Signing Feb . 3 on a snow-day in front of his coaches , friends , family and fellow students , Shaw will play for the school in the Big 10 . “ With the turnout we have here shows how much he has meant to this program ,” coach Woodrum said . “ How much he has meant to this school period . We ’ re just very fortunate to have had this opportunity to have him here at Coshocton playing football for us and also being a student . A lot of people may not realize how great of a student he is , and how great of a kid he is . He is obviously a great football player , but he ’ s a lot more than that . And he ’ s meant a lot to this school and we ’ re very proud today to have him sign this letter to go to Indiana .”
