River View High School head wrestling coach Devin Klein recently reached a career milestone .
Klein picked up his 100th career dual-match win on Feb . 2 at an away meet . He is the only wrestling coach in River View history to accomplish this feat .
“ It is a great feeling ,” Klein said . “ This was a goal I had set for myself a while back , and with the support of our coaching staff and wrestlers , we were able to reach this goal .”
The team , coaching staff and Klein ’ s family marked the occasion with specially made T-shirts .
“ The support is amazing ,” Klein said . “ My family loves the sport as much as I do , so them being there was great . My assistant coach Tod Martin went and had the shirts made for the team and our families without me knowing , which was exciting .”
Klein began coaching the Black Bears in 2009 when he became River View ’ s youngest high school varsity wrestling coach at 21 years old . Since then he has built quite the resume . In 2018 he led River View to the ECOL title ( ECOL or MVL ), second all time in school history , first since 1983 . He also was named East Central Ohio League Coach of the Year twice , tied the River View record for most dual wins in a season ( 14 ), and has coached twelve 100-plus win wrestlers , 15 ECOL champions , 17 state qualifiers and seven state placers .
“ I have been very fortunate , and I have had a lot of success coaching , but that would not be possible if I did not have the support from my staff and the wrestlers ,”
Klein said . “ The successes that I have had are really the wrestlers successes . If it was not for them , none of this would have been possible .”
Klein wrestled for River View from 2002-06 . He is River View ’ s only four-time state qualifier . He placed fourth at state his senior year in 2006 , has 160 career varsity wins and is a three-time sectional tournament champion .
In addition to coaching for the Black Bears , Klein teaches physical education at the junior high and at Keene Elementary .
“ River View is where I wrestled , and it ’ s always where I wanted to be ,” he said . “ It ’ s home for me . I wanted to continue to work with this community and make our wrestlers better people every day .”
