Austin enjoys seeing celebrations

Despite all the pandemic regulations and negativity this last year , there was still a lot of things to celebrate in the community .
Some of the stories I most enjoyed covering focused on local heritage . The annual GAR Bean Dinner celebrated 154 years in the Newcastle area . Originally created to raise funds to provide for widows and orphans from the Civil War , it continues because we don ’ t want the people and the times to be forgotten . Generations in the area come every year to meet friends and neighbors and keep the old times alive . “ It ’ s like a family reunion ,” said Karen Locke , whose family farm is a sixth generation .
I also enjoyed looking back with firsthand stories from locals about what area schools were like in the last century . The stories reveal simpler times that were amusing and also showed very informative , common-sense methods used in early education .
The Girl Scouts still found ways to accomplish their goals during this unusual time . Girl Scout cookie sales as a fundraiser started in 1917 . In the story about Girl Scout Troop 2625 cookie sales , the girls found ways to compensate for the restrictions by selling to family and friends and created their own websites . The troops still had virtual meetings on Zoom . Breighlynn Dile , a student at Sacred Heart , not only met her goal to sell 100 boxes of cookies , but also her total sales were $ 1,200 .
Another favorite story was Joe Balo of Conesville , mayor of the village for 37
years , celebrating his 100th birthday this year . The community came together with a parade past his home , where he sat on the porch and waved . It was his intention to only fill in as mayor for three months until the next election , but the position turned out to be long-term due to circumstances . In any case he was much loved by the community .
The Baby Boomers story , “ School ’ s out for the summer ,” with memories of roller skates , catching lightening bugs and riding bikes to the library to pass summer days with a good book , was a fun way to remember nostalgic days from the past .
Celebrating downtown Coshocton with events at the artPARK , activities on the court square and the farmers market are encouraging for restoring life to downtown . There have been quite a few new events introduced downtown this year and new businesses as well .
I really enjoyed the Big Foot Convention at Lake Park . It was pretty cool . I met Don Keating , who wrote “ The Sasquatch Triangle ,” a very informative book about interesting facts and sightings in this area . There have been many sightings as near as Newcomerstown and Salt Fork . In 2012 the Salt Fork State Park was named as one of USA TODAY ’ s Top Ten “ Squatchiest ” Places . There have been more than 36 sightings in the Newcomerstown area . There also are some great areas right here in Coshocton County .
The most entertaining stories are always the Coshocton County Fair . It is so much fun and a good excuse for me to be at the fair every day watching 4-H kids judging and seeing friends I haven ’ t ran into for a while .

Shabby Chic Creek Side Primitive Cabins offers guests the chance to escape from the hustle and bustle of life but still be just minutes from town .
Located on state Route 60 North just a few miles past River View High School , the primitive cabins are owned by brother and sister Debbie Dickson and Rick Conkle . There are currently three
cabins on the property , two of which have a water-front view of the Killbuck Creek .
The Gram and Gramps Cabin has its own kitchen area and bathroom and will sleep five to six people . The structure was started by Dixon and Conkle ’ s father .
“ Dad died in 2017 ,” Dixon said . “ There are five of us , and Rick and I bought everyone out in March . This wouldn ’ t work if I was doing it just

myself . Rick ’ s been an answer to my prayers . Without him this couldn ’ t get done .”
The second cabin is called The Shante , and it will sleep two people . The third cabin , Stargazer , will sleep five . Neither cabin has its own bathroom , but they are both near the bathhouse , where a washer and dryer also will be located .
Future plans for their
22 acres along the Killbuck Creek include a wellness trail , Frisbee golf , increased boat and water access , pullthrough camping spots , a possible tree house , and a small lodge for seminars and gatherings .
