Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum creates fashion exhibit

While cleaning and checking its inventory , the staff at the Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum discovered they had quite the collection of textiles .
“ We realized we had these beautiful textiles and dresses and thought how cool it would be to put them on display ,” said Jennifer Bush , director of the museum . “ We brainstormed and looked at what other museums did and decided to call it ‘ Embellished ’ and focus on how that was done over the years . The pieces come from as early as the 1800s to the ‘ 60s and are cross culture as well .”
The special exhibit , “ Embellished : Adornment Through the Ages ,” is open until Sunday , Sept . 18 . Guests will find everything from beautiful wedding

dresses to coats , a military uniform and accessories like hats .
On display with the items from the museum are some from the Ohio State University Historic Costume and Textiles Collection .
“ We have a good relationship with the textile museum and borrowed some of their high-end fashions to elevate the exhibit and make it something people from outside of the community would want to come and see ,” Bush said .
This exhibit features several designer pieces including Bob Mackie , an American designer best known for styling many icons such as Carol Burnett , Elton John , Lucille Ball and Cher ; Givenchy , the French fashion house known for creating the little black dress worn by Audrey Hepburn in “ Breakfast at Tiffany ’ s ;” Todd Oldham , a New York-based designer whose bright pieces were often worn by Fran Drescher in “ The Nanny ;” and André Courrèges , who is credited with creating the mini-skirt and the staples of 1960s fashion .

One of the display cases has a cape and dress that belonged to Lora
Pomerene . Her cape is made of turquoise velvet and has a silver mesh overlay on the inside . The peach dress is the 1920 flapper style . Pomerene and her husband Warner helped establish the Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum and donated most of their possessions to it .
“ Embellished ” is sponsored by Joe R . Engle Museum Gallery Fund and the Ohio Arts Council with state tax dollars to encourage economic growth , educational excellence and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans .
The JHM is open Tuesday through Sunday from noon to 4 p . m . until Memorial Day , then every day from noon to 4 p . m . until Labor Day . The museum is located at 300 N . Whitewoman St . in Historic Roscoe Village .
“ Sundays are free for Coshocton County residents , and people also can make appointments for earlier hours during the week ,” Bush said .
