After taking my first bite , I always think that this half-moon shaped dessert will be too rich and sweet to eat in one sitting . A few minutes later when I ’ m licking my fingers to make sure I don ’ t miss even one bit of the sweet filling , I realize that I ’ ve eaten it all despite my intentions .

Neal prefers berries that are not baked into pie but eaten fresh . He eats berries every day . No fruit stand is safe when he is around . During black raspberry season , he can be found beside the roads in Chili ( pronounced Chi-li with a long I , not like a bowl of meaty red stew ), blissfully picking the berries eating a bunch and then picking more to bring home and freeze . I find the wild berries sour . Marty , a lady in our church at Chili Crossroads and one of the best cooks in our area and honestly the world , changed my perception of black raspberries when she invited us over for supper . For dessert , she split a couple of biscuits and buttered them well . She spread them out on a plate then ladled on a homemade hot black raspberry jam . I cut off a piece

with a fork since there was no way to eat this glorious mess by picking it up . The sweet jam , the tang of the berries , the slight salt and creaminess of the butter and the crispy biscuit flooded my taste buds . This is one of those down-home desserts you can ’ t forget . I ’ m including a version of the recipe that is really good but if you want to experience fullness of life , you ’ ll have to ask Marty to make you some .

One of our family recipes for pie is my mom ’ s famous grasshopper pie . Creamy . Frozen . Minty . Did I mention all this deliciousness resides in a chocolate cookie crust ? What is not to like about this ? Holidays in the Scudder household are not complete without this pie . When our friend , Paul , was a boy , he asked my mom if he could have some Cricket Pie . Fortunately , there are no grasshoppers or crickets in it . Instead , you will enjoy smooth and creamy mint flavor with every bite . Consider making one of these recipes ( or all of them ) when you really want to wow your guests for your summer gatherings .
