LCC anniversary celebration wraps up with award presentation

A weekend full of activities to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Leadership Coshocton County wrapped up on Aug . 14 with the presentation of a special alumni award .
Alumni of the group were invited to attend a casino night , family fun day and banquet , and the first outstanding Coshocton County Leadership Alumni Award was presented to Ken Smailes .
“ When our committee was meeting to make these plans , we all agreed that we were lacking a recognition award ,” said Betsy Gosnell , the executive director of Leadership Coshocton County . “ There are over 500 alumni , and we all know so many who give back .”
Nominations for the award were taken from the community . The winner was then selected on how well they fulfilled the goal of the program : identify , train and motivate citizens to
accept volunteer leadership roles within the community .
Smailes was at WTNS for more than 20 years and is a fulltime pastor , but over the years , he has done much more than that .
“ When I read his nomination , I was floored ,” Gosnell said . “ I didn ’ t know everything he has done .”
Smailes , a 1996 LCC graduate , has shared his love of history at numerous programs , been a speaker at Lenten Luncheons , spoke at career days and more . One of his contributions to the community that he is most proud of is sharing local history with people .
“ That is critical to figuring out our identity and what it means to be from Coshocton County ,” Smailes said .

group and the hundreds of other alumni .
“ I appreciate the recognition ,” he said . “ Recognition isn ’ t something I ever strived for . I just did my job . I appreciate it though , and
I ’ m humbled .”
Gosnell said they plan to continue to present this award yearly at the LCC graduation . You do not have to be a graduate of the program to submit a nomination .
