Tour showcases work of Coshocton SWCD

Officials from the state , county and city gathered at the county fairgrounds on Tuesday , Aug . 3 for a showcase of what the Coshocton Soil and Water Conservation District does . Shuttles were provided for the tour .
Deb Bigelow , program administrator , said the tour was planned to show officials exactly what the Coshocton SWCD does . More than 30 people gathered for the tour with the first stop at Kids America near the new pickleball courts .
Ryan Medley of the SWCD said the city came to them for help with a flooding issue around the new courts . About 500 acres of the city drain into that area , and during

The Bakersville Volunteer Fire Department storms there could be 2 feet of water on the courts . Medley said they helped create a storm-management plan and used a natural , dry creek bed to help with the run-off .
Because of the fine sand that was discovered during the work , Medley said the upper end of the drainage area needs to be looked at , and the city has plans to do that . There may be cracked or damaged culverts or pipes that are letting the sand into the water and causing the area near Kids America to fill in .
The group then toured the farm of Bruce Stevens and learned about his animal waste facility and water for his livestock . Supper was provided by Real McCoy

Conservation District has been part of Coshocton for 79 years . Funds for the district come from the local level , which are matched by the state . The SWCD also works with state and federal partners to address local concerns . In 2020 , for every local dollar invested , $ 4.30 was brought back to Coshocton in conservation funding .
Bigelow said the tour showed the wide variety of what the SWCD does . “ We work with landowners in the community to protect soil and water ,” she said .
SWCD also believes wise use of natural resources will ensure future generations will have the same quality of life as those who lived before .

On Saturday , Aug . 14 , breakfast will be served starting at 7 a . m ., followed by a tractor pull at 9:30 a . m . Classes are 5,500 pounds , 7,000 and 10,500 . The Kiddie Tractor Pull will be at 1 p . m . with registration at noon while musical entertainment by Wacky ’ s Country Experience will be from 6-8:30 p . m .
On Sunday , Aug . 15 , a tractor pull with classes for 8,500 and 12,500 pounds will begin at 1 p . m .
All proceeds will go to benefit the Bakersville Volunteer Fire Department and the Bakersville Community Park .
