During the worst of the pandemic , Ridgewood Local Schools filled bags of food for their students to have at home . When the funds ran out for it , superintendent Mike Masloski contacted the West Lafayette United Methodist Church and asked if this was something they could continue . The church thought it was the perfect outreach ministry for them to do .
Peggy Ball said the church received a grant last year from the Coshocton Foundation to start the Blessing Bag project , and the grant was given to them again for this year .
“ We also get donations from members of the church , and Isleta UMC also is very supportive of us . We usually have around 12 volunteers every Tuesday morning , and we pack 155 Blessing Bags with six to eight food items . Ridgewood provides the bags for us . We have a system so it doesn ’ t take a long time , and we have fun chatting while we fill the bags ,” Ball said .
Ball said she and her husband take the bags to the schools for distribution . The teachers put the bags in the students ’ backpacks .
The bags usually consist of a meal-type item such as soup or mac and cheese , two breakfast items and snacks . Pop Tarts are a favorite for the students .
“ We put granola or fruit and grain bars in too . Cups of applesauce and pudding are good snacks too ,” Ball said .
The bags are meant to help supplement food the
