Some of Kris Hains ’ fondest memories of growing up were trips to a local video rental store and picking out the movies his family would watch together . He also got to choose a video game to play . When the digital application age took over , he wanted to preserve those memories and show his teenage children what going to a video rental store was like .

“ I have been collecting games and movies for years , and when Family Video shut down , I got a bunch of their racks and items . I grew up huge into video games and movies and loved playing and watching them and wanted to preserve the feel of a video rental store . My kids and I will go pick out a movie to watch , kind of like we ’ re renting it , then watch the movie . We play a bunch of old systems I have , like Atari 2600 and the original Nintendo , and love playing the old arcade machines ,” Hains said .

He has five full-size arcade games in their arcade room and several gaming systems besides the Atari and Nintendo . He even has an old box TV because some of the games can only be played on the older TVs . His room is lined with shelves of games for each system and has posters and lighted signs from the video store . The room looks like a store , with shelves all the way around it .

His collection consists of 75 game consoles , more than 1,000 games and over 2,700 movies . He has laser disc , VHS , DVDs , Bluray , HD DVD , Betamax , CED , cassettes , CDs , vinyl records and 8-track tapes .

“ I used to love going to the arcade in West Lafayette with my parents ,” Hains said . “ I would have an amazing time . I decided then that I wanted to start collecting . I have most of the games I grew up playing such as Spider-Man , Zelda and Super Mario Brothers . I have accumulated about everything that I played as a

child . I love that feeling of nostalgia of playing them as an adult .

“ I grew up going to rental stores like JW ’ s and Classic Family Video in the plaza and all the others that were in town . It was always an amazing experience , going and picking out a few movies and a game . That was your weekend .”

Hains wanted to do this for his kids because of how much fun he had as a child . “ I like

to hold the actual movie in my hand . My kids love picking out a movie or a game . It feels a lot like you are going to the rental store . I have been collecting for years but finally had the space to put it all together ,” he said .
