It ’ s almost the best time of the year — except for those allergies

Mark Fortune
Mark ’ s Musings
I have shared this in previous columns , but it bears repeating at this time of year . Spring is my second favorite time of the year with fall topping my list . If it weren ’ t for my darn allergies , spring would top the list . I know some folks have more allergies in the fall , but those don ’ t seem to bother me much . Spring is another story .
And why not ? Who doesn ’ t like the green grass versus that ugly brown stuff we tolerate all winter . Who doesn ’ t prefer the green on trees versus — well — nothing but bare limbs . Blooming flowers , dogwoods , tulips and more brighten our landscape and , for me anyway , tend to lift my spirits . No , we didn ’ t have the typical winter , even for our part of Ohio , but it was still long and dreary . It ’ s no wonder people make the long trek to Texas , Georgia , Florida or any of those places where it ’ s warm during the winter months . You can ’ t blame them .
For those who have been watching basketball for pretty much the entire month of March , it comes down to tonight ’ s game for the men ’ s Div . I championship . I am writing this column on Monday so I can make my prediction — UConn will cut down the nets .
On the women ’ s side of things — if you had the opportunity to watch the women ’ s Div . I championship game yesterday between Iowa and LSU — you witnessed some terrific basketball . You saw a better game in my opinion between Iowa and last
year ’ s national champion South Carolina on Friday evening with a performance for the ages from Iowa star and Player of the Year Caitlin Clark , who scored 41 points in the Hawkeye win . I am sure Clark would trade the award for a national championship trophy .
If you had the chance to watch the Ashland University Lady Eagles ( 37-0 ) win the Div . II women ’ s championship game against Minnesota Duluth ( 32-4 ) on Saturday , you saw an incredible contest and a very talented group of players on both sides . And gee , I didn ’ t see any taunting or pointing to a “ ring finger ,” and the players and coaches even shook hands — you know , all those things kids are taught to do when they first start playing the game . I think it ’ s called respect or something like that . It was on full display both
during and after this game .
Congratulations to former River View basketball standout Kari ( Daugherty ) Pickens and her Lady Eagles for an undefeated season . That ’ s rare in the sports world , and this is not the first time for the Ashland Lady Eagles . It also was heartwarming to see coach Pickens ’ comments following the game . It takes a lot of courage in today ’ s world to openly express your faith and beliefs on the national stage . The world of sports — and the world in general — could use more people like coach Kari .
Happy Easter to all our Beacon readers ! Don ’ t eat too much chocolate . You might need a loan for those eggs — actually the spouse just told me eggs are coming down in price , so stock up — but most importantly , let ’ s pause to reflect on the true significance of Easter .
