TUSCARAWAS COUNTY - From the moment a patient is
diagnosed with cancer, they are deemed a survivor. No
matter what age or stage someone is as they face cancer,
they are surviving that moment, that day, that week.
As a way to celebrate their strength, hard work and
perseverance, Relay For Life of Tuscarawas County is
hosting the first of several events aimed at survivors
on Thursday, May 4 at Buckeye Career Center in New
Philadelphia inside the Trumpet Room. A special Sur-
vivor Luncheon, catered by students at Buckeye Career
Center, begins at 11:30 a.m. It will feature incredible
homemade foods as well as giveaways and appreciation
gifts for everyone in attendance.
“Facing cancer is not something we want anyone to
do alone,” said Event Leader Bev Keller. “I’ve been down
that road and couldn’t imagine doing it without the help
and support of my family, friends and the community.
That is why, as a Relay, we are looking for survivors. We
want to help support them in whatever phase of the
disease they are facing. We want to celebrate them. We
want to support them. We want to help them fight back.”
Inviting survivors to share a meal together is just one
way to show support. Keller shared that members of
the Event Leadership Team and a cast of volunteers are
eager to meet those in the community who are facing
cancer or have beat cancer.
“This is about the survivors,” she said. “If we can help
them forget for a few hours or enjoy something new,
then I think we are doing our job as human beings.”
COSHOCTON COUNTY
At this year’s event, set for Saturday, June 17 at Ga-
raway’s Burke Wentz Field in Sugarcreek, survivors
will lead the way when they make the first lap around
the track at 10 a.m. Following the lap, a brunch will be
held inside the Garaway Belden Community Center at
10:30 a.m. with a special reception later in the day from
6 - 8 p.m. The heartfelt luminaria ceremony is held at 9
p.m. (dusk). This year’s theme is board games with the
phrase: “Life May Be a Twister, But Sorry Cancer, We’re
In It To Win It” and will feature whimsical games at
each team’s camp around the track from Candyland to
Hungry Hungry Hippos.
“It’s not too late to get involved in any part of Relay
For Life of Tuscarawas County,” Keller said. “We want
everyone in the county to be involved and help us raise
funds for a cure, awareness of the cause and hope for the
future. And right now we are searching for survivors.
