Search starts to replace Summers

By Josie Sellers
The River View Local School District Board of Education accepted superintendent Dalton Summers ’ resignation , effective July 31 , with mixed emotions at its April 13 meeting .
“ When he first started , I thought what are we doing hiring this young man , but he hit the ground running and hasn ’ t looked back ,” said David Lapp , president of the school board . “ Thank you for what you have done for this district and for the state school funding issue .”
Dalton , who has served as the district ’ s superintendent for nine years , was given the opportunity to be the superintendent of the Ohio Valley Educational Service Center .
“ He was not searching for this position ,” Lapp said . “ His new employer sought him out . That speaks volumes about the man , father , husband and superintendent that he is .”
The Ohio Valley ESC serves all of the school districts in Washington , Monroe , Noble and Guernsey counties , an area where Summers grew up and began his educational career .
“ Given that there are only , I believe , 51 ESCs in the state , these positions and opportunities do not frequently become available , and I felt compelled to take advantage of the opportunity ,” Summers said . “ Personally , I look forward to the opportunity to just be a dad to my three boys for a while . I hope to attend their ball games

The council wanted to work with a local contractor to keep local people working and the funds in Coshocton County . They felt Hathaway ’ s long history of excellent work made it the best choice .
An issue with a drainage problem also was discussed , along with complaints of different nuisance items in the village .
and their events as just their dad rather than their superintendent and father . This position can afford my family this opportunity .”
Summers and his family plan to stay in Coshocton County , and his three sons will continue attending River View schools .
“ Before we came here , I told my wife if we were going to move , it had to be to a place where I could deer hunt , drive a truck , have gravel roads and have our children in the best educational environment ,” he said . “ Nine years later those are the same reasons we are staying . My offices will be in Cambridge and Marietta , and I ’ m going to drive a lot , but I want my kids to stay here . We have good schools here , and it ’ s not because of the superintendent . It ’ s because of the board , the leaders , the unbelievable teachers and community support .
“ We might not have passed levies , but I ’ ve seen community members dig into their pockets and do things like pay off kids ’ lunch accounts , and never take for granted that when we have Christmas programs , there is no place to park . This is an outstanding community , and we have extraordinary kids .”
There has already been internal interest in Summers ’ position because staff knew about his decision two weeks prior to the meeting . The board internally posted the position April 14-20 and interviewed candidates on April 21 . The decision to hire an internal candidate or move forward with an external search will be made on Friday , April 23 .
“ I want to thank the RVBOE , the staff , the students and this community for the past nine years ,” Summers said . “ This position of being a school superintendent comes with many challenges as well as rewards . Being able to say that I was privileged enough to serve a district of this caliber for close to a decade is an honor that I could not have been blessed with without the full support of all those mentioned above . I am proud to have served this district as the superintendent and equally as proud to continue to be part of it as a parent and community member .”
