Not only do gardens add curb appeal to your home , but also working in them can be a great way to relieve stress . Add vegetable or fruit plants to your garden and you ’ ll even save money on groceries .
Penny Rouse , owner of Sprout Garden Center , said the first thing gardeners need to do every spring is clean up the gardens from the winter .
“ Get rid of dead leaves and weeds . Trim back any damaged ( plants ). Add a layer of organic material to your soil ,” Rouse said .
After that , Rouse said it ’ s time to plan what you want this year . “ Do you need a new design ? To tear out old or overgrown shrubs ? Add a perennial bed ? Grow vegetables ?”
When asked how a person would make a new design , Rouse said , “ I think it depends on what their landscape needs are and how much time they have

Penny Rouse , owner of Sprout Garden Center , has a variety of plants to help people plan their garden this year .
such as whether they need a low-maintenance garden or would like a butterfly garden or one full of perennials that they won ’ t have to replant every year .
“ Look at the style of your house . It ’ s about how to balance style to the scale ,” Rouse said .
Deb Gaumer and Kristy Leindecker , owners of The Garden Patch Greenhouse ,
agreed deciding what you want is one of the first things a gardener needs to do . “ Design your garden space with the plants and seeds you want . This prevents overbuying at the garden center and overcrowding your plants .”
The first thing they advise is for gardeners to test their soil before planting so they can add
the right amendments the garden needs to be successful .
Leindecker and Gaumer also said before you go to the garden center , you need to consider several things : How many hours of sunlight will your garden get ? How much space do you have in the garden ? What plants or seeds are you thinking about ? What goal do you desire ? They also said if you take pictures of the garden site to bring to the garden center , it can help their employees answer your questions better .
They also advise to start small . Do your research and consider a raised bed , at first . Grow vegetables your family likes , and when you are comfortable with your gardening skills , add more space to try new varieties of vegetables . They also said , “ Even the most experienced gardeners have experienced failures . Learning is part of any type of gardening .”
