Many United Kingdom emigrants came to USA
Many of us have a deep-seated urge to know where we came from .
Maybe you have links to a Civil War soldier , a family member who settled in Jamestown , have a descendant who came over on the Mayflower or a felon who was transported to America from 1788 . Did you know there was a gold rush to Australia in 1850 ?
Over half of emigrants from the United Kingdom came to the USA while the rest went to Canada and Australia . It has been estimated about 10 million people left Britain between 1815 and 1940 .
Civil registration of birth marriages and deaths in Wales and England began July 1837 . For Northern Ireland consult the General Register ’ s Office .
Census records give useful information taken in England and Wales every 10 years since 1901 with the exception of the World War year of 1941 . The census was originally only a number count , but from 1841 the

head of the household had to give the names of every resident living in the household .
You can view census records for England and Wales at the National Archives in Kew and its partnership ’ s website like Ancestry and Find My Past . Kew houses national documents where most official documents are kept .
There is a 100-year secrecy rule that means the 1921 census will be the most recent one you will be able to research . The recent release is now online .
In addition , most repositories now have searchable catalogues .
Don ’ t forget The National Archives are extremely valuable . Their records house millions of historical records . Check the website for holdings .
The Society of Genealogists holds the largest collection of parish register copies . If you have Scottish roots , check out the ScotlandsPeople Centre in Edinburgh because it is the official genealogical source for online birth , marriage and death registers that go back to 1553 .
Remember many parts of greater London were once under the jurisdiction of the surrounding counties , each with its own archives .
The Scottish Genealogy , also in Edinburgh , has a collection in the largest monumental inscriptions , burial death and mortcloth records in Scotland . A mortcloth is a ceremonial cloth draped over a coffin .
