Follow these tips to help plan your next garage sale

By Jen Jones
Every spring thousands of people await the first garage sales of the year . These sales can truly be a great way to set up a new home or find unique items . If you are one who wants to declutter your home , this time of year is perfect for a sale . Garage sales can be a lot of work , but clearing your home of unwanted items and making extra money can make the work worth it .
Choose a date
The date you choose may have a big effect on how well your sale goes . Friday and Saturday sales are usually busier . Near the beginning of the month is a good time too . If you can get several homes near you to have sales the same day as you do , you will definitely draw more crowds as people like to go to as many as they can within a short period of time .
Gather items
Start going through your home room by room . Get rid of anything that doesn ’ t bring you joy when you see it . If you haven ’ t used or worn something in a year , it may be time to get rid of it . Decluttering your home can be difficult as so many things have sentimental value , but it may be time to let other family members have those sentimental items . If no one wants them , it ’ s time to sell .
Many families have a special spot set up in their home that everyone can add unwanted items throughout the year , so at sale time , it is much easier to go through your home and find things you no longer want or need . A great way to encourage children to clear out their toys is to tell them they can have any money their items earn .
Get items ready
Before you price your items , make sure everything is clean and works . Check clothing and make sure there are no stains or
rips , that all the buttons are there , and that zippers work . Clean the dust off everything . If something doesn ’ t work , you can still try to sell it , but you need to put a sign on it that it doesn ’ t work . Someone may want it for parts or be able to fix it .
As you clean and price your items , try to put like items together . Put kitchen items in a box . Separate clothing into sizes . All home-decorating items should be together , as well as tools or holiday items . This will make it much easier to set up your sale .
Before you can set up your sale , clean up your garage or sale area . Sweep , knock down spider webs and make sure the lighting is good . If your pet is near the area , make sure to clean up the area so no one steps in anything . Check the area for possible tripping hazards and level off any you find .
Advertise
You need to get the word out about your sale . Local newspaper ads are a great way to let a large audience know . Post flyers in grocery stores and make sure to use social media as much as possible . When your sale is set up , you can post pictures of items you have for sale to draw even more people to the sale . The day of the sale , be sure your address is clearly marked and use balloons and signs to help people find your home easier . Consider signs at the end of your street to make it even easier .

Set up your sale
People who go to garage sales like clean , well-organized sales . If possible , hang up clothes and pictures . You also can use totes to put pictures in so people can flip through them . Picture frames work well in totes or boxes too . Stand them up so it ’ s easy for people to see all of them .
Make an area for each type of item you have .

Gather tools , toys and holiday items in different areas . Every sale has a miscellaneous table but organize your things as much as you can before putting them on that table . People who come to sales often know what they are looking for and don ’ t always want to dig through piles of things to see if you have what they want .
If you have anything that needs plugged in , have an outlet ready so people can try the items to be sure they work . Think about having some batteries available for the same reason . Make sure you have plenty of bags , paper to wrap breakable items in and extra boxes for people to carry their purchases home . You also need to have plenty of change . One idea is to not price anything less than a quarter — that way you will only need quarters as change and not dimes and nickels too .

Always get more change than you think you will need . It would be terrible to lose a sale because you didn ’ t have the change you needed . You also will need to decide if you are willing to accept checks for larger items .
Sale day
No matter what time you set to start your sale , people will be there early . You will need to decide if you are willing to let people look before that time or not . Put out your signs and balloons and carry as many items as you can into your driveway . Your garage won ’ t be as cluttered , and seeing what you have could entice more people to stop .
Be ready to discuss prices on everything . Everyone who comes is looking for a bargain , so try to know what the lowest price is
