The Muskingum Valley Educational Service Center recently secured a $ 128,367 grant from the Ohio Department of Education to expand industry-recognized credential programs to high school students in its service region .
More than 150 students will have the
opportunity to earn the Elder Care Certificate , a program designed to upgrade the skills of those working with elderly citizens through better understanding the challenges seniors face , building interpersonal tools to function as team members and gaining expertise in serving the

aging population . Students who earn the certificate will be eligible for four industry-recognized credentials through the Ohio Department of Education . The Elder Care Certificate is appropriate for clinical and nonclinical career paths in the healthcare field .
In Ohio ’ s southeast region , home health aides , registered nurses , medical assistants and nursing assistants are listed as top jobs with more than 500 openings , according to Ohio ’ s Top Jobs List ( Governor ’ s Office of Workforce Transformation , 2021 ). Pairing workforce data with educator insights helped the Muskingum Valley Business Advisory Council identify the Elder Care Certificate as an appropriate student offering .
The Muskingum Valley Business Advisory Council will lead the project , which includes Caldwell Exempted Village Schools , Coshocton County Career Center , Maysville Local Schools , Mid-East Career and Technology Centers , Morgan Local Schools , and West Muskingum Local Schools .
MVESC is a resource center for schools , agencies and communities in Coshocton , Hocking , Morgan , Muskingum , Noble , Perry and Tuscarawas counties and beyond . Covering more than 2,700 square miles in its direct service area , MVESC helps nearly 31,000 students learn and more than 2,000 teachers teach in the largest service region of all 52 ESCs in Ohio .
