The ages and stages of a child ’ s development

Every child develops at a different pace . The following list of ages and stages for children is only a guideline . All concerns should be directed to a child ’ s doctor . 2 months — Begins to smile at people . — Tries to look at parent . — Coos . — Turns head toward sounds .
— Can hold head up and begins to push when lying on tummy . — Pays attention to faces . — Can briefly calm herself / himself ( such as sucking on hand ).
— Begins to show boredom if activity doesn ’ t change .
— Makes smoother movements with arms and legs . 4 months — Begins to babble . — Cries in different ways to show hunger , pain or being tired . — Responds to affection . — Reaches for toys with one hand . — Holds head steady . — Pushes down on legs when feet are on a hard surface .
— May be able to roll over from tummy to back .
— When on tummy , pushes up to elbows .
— Uses hands and eyes together such as seeing and reaching for a toy . 6 months — Copies sounds . — Begins to sit without support . — Likes to play with others , especially parents . — Responds to own name .
— Strings vowels together when babbling (“ ah ,” “ eh ,” “ oh ”).
— Looks around at things close to him / her . — Shows curiosity . — Rolls over in both directions .
— Brings things to mouth and passes items from hand to hand . 9 months — May be afraid of strangers . — Has favorite toys . — Uses finger to point at things . — Puts items in mouth . — Plays peek-a-boo . — Stands , holding on . — Can get into sitting position . — Crawls . — Understands “ no .” — Makes lots of different sounds . 12 months — Uses simple gestures such as shaking head for “ no ” or waving “ bye bye .” — Copies gestures .
— Responds to simple spoken requests .
— Says “ mama ” and
“ dada .” — Pulls up to stand . — Shows fear . — Looks at the right picture when it ’ s named . — Tries to repeat words . — Puts out arm or leg to help with getting dressed . 18 months — Says several single words . — Walks alone . — Knows what ordinary objects are for , such as spoon or brush .
— Plays simple pretend games such as feeding a doll .
