What would you do if you won the lottery ?
When Coshocton ’ s Write-On Writers Guild met recently , our writing prompt was “ If I ever hit the lottery , I would ... “
My favorite part of our monthly meetings is listening to what each person writes on a common subject . Perhaps you ’ ve occasionally thought about this subject . Here ’ s my essay . Hope you enjoy it .
First off , winning the lottery would mean playing the lottery , as in buying a ticket , checking to see if you ’ ve won , going to Columbus for the claiming procedure , and then , if you truly win , let ’ s say $ 1 million , having the government take their share , which is about half , deciding if you want to receive what ’ s left in one lump sum or spread out over several payments , perhaps your lifetime , then worrying about somebody trying to steal it from you .
Whew , is that the way it works ?
The dream of winning the lottery represents being free from financial worries , having all your bills and credit cards paid , being able to live in a home you would like , to drive a car you would like , to go on a cruise or an overseas trip , to be able to invest money for future hard times or skyhigh inflation , to eat well , to send your kids and grandkids to college , to have fun and friends , and freedom .
To have what truly matters in life .
You ’ ve heard of people being born “ with a silver spoon in their mouth .” I “ won the lottery ” when I was born . And I got to keep it all . My million-dollar winnings included being born when and where I was in the United States of America , to my particular parents , with my immediate and extended family , the experiences that were unique to me , the people who helped shape who I am , the set of circumstances that sent me to Washington , D . C . to be taken to a specific church where I joined the choir , to meet my future husband , on and on . You get the picture .
Maybe it wasn ’ t winning the lottery that gave me a million-dollar life . Maybe it was God ’ s plan for me .
