The Walker, Bicyclist and Bus-riders’ Advocate
Veronica Vanterpool heads the Tri-State Transportation
Campaign (TSTC), a non-profit advocacy group working
to reduce car dependency by encouraging transit friendly,
walkable and bikeable communities with housing clustered
around transit . The group works with community partners and
elected officials in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut and
also follows the impact of federal transportation spending and
policy on the tri-state region. “”How transportation dollars are
spent says a lot about mobility priorities,” she says. “Since the
1950s, most transportation funding has gone towards building
new highways or roads. With walking, biking, and transit use
reaching unprecedented levels, there must be a better balance
of transportation dollars.”
Alexander, though, points to the Suburban Millennial
Institute study which shows that despite the loss of some
youth, primarily to the pull of urban jobs and lifestyle, 70%
of the 18 to 30 year olds polled plan to stay here, so the
handwringing may be overblown. Moreover, desirable
rental apartments and nightlife options are growing. Live
music is good they say, in the villages of Rockville Centre,
Huntington and Patchogue. Also, young entrepreneurs may
find support at Launchpad-LI, a business accelerator and
co-working community in Mineola and in Huntington Village.
Vision Long Island honored the 10 best LI projects and
models of leadership of the 50 applications it received at the
Smart Growth Awards on June 13th.
Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano received an
award for being fully aboard on the smart growth train:
He has championed six TOD projects that will add 1,200
new rental housing units, he moved forward on the sewer
improvements for the huge Bay Park Sewage Treatment
facility and other sewer upgrades, such as one planned
for the antiquated Hempstead Village pipes, without which
there could be no downtown redevelopment. He backed
the legislature’s passage of Complete Streets, and saw the
Nassau Coliseum project through a sometimes tortuous
bidding process to see construction begin by early 2015.
Meanwhile Suffolk County Executive, Steve Bellone also
has the admiration of Eric Alexander and John Durso for
his “Connect Long Island” proposal for buses, rail, bike
lanes and TOD, in addition to new, quality, affordable rental
housing options in Suffolk.

“Long Island Revitalization” was the panel discussion topic
at the Hauppauge Industrial Association-LI Trade Show
in May. New Village@Patchogue was presented by the
Village’s Mayor Paul Pontieri and lead developer TriTec.
Following an investment of $110 million, the village has an
entirely new vibe and is a destination for diners, shoppers
and the curious. The first building to open has 291 sold-out
at market rate, and affordable housing units plus office and
retail space. Historical buildings and businesses have been
preserved, including a hot performance venue.
Ronkonkoma Station, by the same developer, is designed
as another vibrant, walkable downtown and hopes to attract
some of LI’s “iconic” retailers. The Wyandanch Rising
project, being developed by the Albanese Organization, was
started when the Town of Babylon worked with the MTA on
a transfer of land to the Town and renovation of the LIRR
station. The rental apartments under construction are sized
