Ten e traordinary years in the making...
2015 will mark the end of one
journey, and the beginning of a
new one for Torri Anderson and
her goal of building the Against
Abuse, Inc. Women’s Shelter
here in Maricopa. It took ten
years full of victories and setbacks, but in the end, Anderson
would not have it any other way.
“It has allowed us to create an
awareness and really build partnerships,” said Anderson. “It’s
been a long process for us because everything has been built
from donations but the community has been amazing. It’s been
absolutely incredible what people have come with.”
Anderson says there is a long
list of businesses and volunteers
that have made it happen. InPhoto by Raquel Saspe
stances such as two competitors, Torri Anderson
H & N Landscaping and AZ-Rys Landscaping working together to get the irrigations lines in and committing to future maintenance services. Anderson
says she has always been humbled by community leaders who have offered assistance.
“It’s individuals like Mayor Price, calling, asking, and them going after it, making sure it is taken care of,” said Anderson. “Or when I do call someone, it’s
always a ‘yes, whatever you need’.”
Anderson began her involvement with the Against Abuse chapter out of Casa
Grande. Right after the City of Maricopa incorporated in 2003, she knew the
area would need its own shelter to assist future residents.
“The shelter in Casa Grande was always full,” Anderson said. “It has been really hard here for women in Maricopa to just uproot from their job, to pull their
kids out of school and it made sense to have a shelter here so they can continue
their lives and make the changes they need.”
