The Copa Issue 11 / Oct 2014 | Page 6

Editor’s Page High five. You survived those killer electric bills and now it is time to get your hoodie on and enjoy the return of the cool. The good vibez have been sent out to the Universe and now we are getting a return signal—the Maricopa Music Festival is here to drop bombz, with both local bands and those coming in from out-of-state ready to rock your flip-flops off ya. It is the first of its kind here and don’t worry naysayers, it is only the beginning… Event promoter and resident, Chrystal Allen- O’Jon has been on a year long mission putting together the musical line-up, the vendors, and doing whatever she can to make sure this happened. It doesn’t stop here though. The next step is to build a scene where musicians can perform and we can enjoy listening to some live music around the Copa. Chrystal plans to begin having battle-of-the-band contests and artist features as the conversation already begins for next year’s Music Fest. In this edition, we highlighted some of the local musicians with dedicated pages. If you see them at the Music Festival, we designed those pages so that you can get your copy signed by them. The event is not just an all day jam session—it is to show support for military families and the local food banks. It is what the Copa is all about. You can search the world over, but we guarantee you won’t find another community like this, where everyone comes together for those in need… The event is perfectly timed for Veteran’s Day and ahem, a little occasion called Halloween. If you haven’t noticed, we done flipped the script and created a backside cover for Halloween. Our graphics designer, David Burk, is a bit of a horror movie aficionado, having done some work for the movie industry and has made it a personal point to meet all the infamous movie monsters out there. It is also the only time of year, when us characters at Hey Maricopa TV and the Copa Magazine seem completely normal—so please forgive us, but we have to embrace the night of tricks and treats! And speaking of characters, this marks the end of the political season. Another high five! Let us be free of signs and slogans, and let us move forward with the thought that community comes before personal ambitions and ideology. We would like to thank the participants of the Hey Maricopa TV Rockin’ the Vote Challenge: Rich Vitiello, Henry Wade, Lee Feiles, Marty Hermanson, Peg Chapados, and even though he was running uncontested, Mayor Price. We congratulate Councilmember Chapados on her election to council, as she was able to win her seat during the primary. We don’t know how Election Day will turn out for the remaining candidates, but we can honestly say, no matter the outcome, we are still one community. For good measure though, we have called a few Men in Black to go around the Copa, zapping memories of the crazy things said and done during politics season. In the end, being a grumpy ol’ troll this time of year is not permitted. We have no preparations for snowstorms and blizzards, unless we are talking Dairy Queen. This is when we reunite with our neighbors, our community, after having locked ourselves away in the AC all summer. This is where all the fun begins. Time to open up those garage doors, hang out on the driveways—pop open those cans of soda pop as the kids ride around the block. Time to toss that football around and shoot a few hoops at the park. This is where we get the backyard bonfires going and enjoy all the good vibez being sent out, and all those being returned to the Copa. Only question remains…when is the Toga party? Be cool. Be safe. Be Happy. Peace Out, John [email protected]
