The Salzburg Festival is a prominent festival of music and drama established in 1920 . It is held each summer ( for five weeks starting in late July ) in the Austrian town of Salzburg , the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart . One highlight is the annual performance of the play Jedermann ( Everyman ) by Hugo von Hofmannsthal .
The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra is in residence , and every year the three main concert halls - as well as several smaller venues - sell out for a series of nearly 200 performances of operas , orchestral works , and chamber concerts .
Furthermore , visitors to the Salzburg Festival can combine the enjoyment of art with vacationing . During the daytime , the unique surroundings and the lakes of the Salzkammergut make for wonderful excursions and golfing – in the evening , the Festival beckons with incomparable performances .
