At a young age, Poe's father abandoned his family and Poe's mother later passed. Poe was separated from his siblings and sent to live with the Allans, who were friends of the family.
Unfortunately, the Allan family was never the best foster home. Mr. Allan disliked Poe and even went so far as to send him away with barely any money.
After being kicked out by the Allans, Poe struggled to make a living for himself. At the time, being an author in America was not financially stable. Despite works such as "The Raven" which brought him fame, he remained poor.
Poe was a raving drunk and often turned to the bottle to ease his pain. He was often seen roaming the town while intoxicated.
Every woman that Poe loved was either ripped from him, unable to marry him, or died in his arms.
